Black Google Mobile is a website powered by a Google Custom Search engine which aims to offer an enhanced mobile phone searching experience by saving battery power, loading faster, using less bandwidth and reducing eye strain.[1][2] The site launched in August 2010 and lays claim to being the first 'Battery Saving Search'.[3] Black Google Mobile supports preferred search settings in 83 languages and 239 countries.[4]
The main concept behind Black Google Mobile is that mobile phones screens, such as OLED, can use significantly less energy displaying the darker color black over the brighter color white.[5] Some display technologies, such as some back-lit LCDs, don't necessarily save energy displaying darker colors. By attempting to deliver smaller result pages and by not containing any heavy JavaScript the site tries to use less battery, load faster and use less data. Eye strain can be caused by excessively bright light and the site attempts to reduce eye fatigue by deploying the black background.[6][7]
The black energy saving concept was first brought to light by a blog which estimated 750 megawatt hours per year could be saved on personal computers.[8]
